Medical Acupuncture - now available at all our clinics Medical acupuncture (sometimes known as "dry needling") is now available at our Chigwell, Woodford and our new Waltham abbey clinics. The technique is currently available from three of our osteopaths who have completed courses with the BRITISH MEDICAL ACUPUNCTURE SOCIETY (BMAS). Medcial acupuncture differs slighly from "traditional chinese acupuncture" (TCA) in that the needles are usually inserted at points corresponding with a modern understanding of anatomy and neuro-physiology rather than according to the energy meridian model of TCA. Also, with medical acupuncture the needles are more often inserted into muscle tissue as opposed to just the skin; contrary to many patients' expectations this often makes the technique less painful since muscles are usually less sensitive than the skin. Medical acupuncture can be very effective in relieving muscular tension especially the tigger points or knots that occur after injuries such as whiplash or disorders such as fibromyalgia. Also because the needles can be inserted according to a modern scientific understanding of neuro-physiology there is a sound basis to be able to affect mechanisms such as blood flow to the internal organs etc., therefore the technique can be applied to disorders such as irritable bowel, migraines, sinus problems, irritatable bladder symptoms, (some) gynaecological problems etc. Depending on your preference and/or the clinical indications our osteopaths are happy to use acupuncture during regular osteopathy sessions or as a stand alone therapy (i.e. acupuncture and no other techniques) . There is usually a small additional charge when using acupuncture (approximately £2) to cover the expense of the needles and other costs associated with the safe disposure of the acupuncture needles.
